Licences Object type
Object type Licences offers functionality to enter information of acquired licences into i-doit system and linking such information to already existing and documented infrastructure devices and programs.
I-doit sets licences in terms of objects or packets. Licence object contains a specific category Licences in which the actual licence information will be saved.
Within Licences category exists three subcategories: Under Overview subcategory will be Overall Licence Statistics shown. It features total amount of licences, total brutto worth of licences, total amount of free licences, and total amount of licences currently in use. Application specific licences are listed under navigation point Group and by selecting one licence from the list shows detailed information such as threshold values and a contact person in charge of licences.
Subnavigation point List shows actual licence information among with other detailed information such as to which licence group it's been linked, total amount of licences, price per unit, licence key, and start & expiration dates for licence.
Example
Name of object "Server Licences" Licence group "Server XY" Lincenced to "Server XY Professional" (with n number of licences)
In the following scenario a desired amount of server licences will be given to a new licence object. The first step is to create a new licence object by selecting the main navigation point Software and choosing from the menu tree a category Licences and then clicking on new within the content window. We are going to name now our new licence object as a "Server licences", which shall be a container for all server licences.
Next step is to select a subcategory Group by clicking the "+" on the left of a container Licences which appends now the navigation to a view of subcategories of Licences. Within the content area we are suppose to click on new to create a new group named "Server XY" which will be entered into Group Title. For the Contact we are suppose to select a corresponding contact person for this type of licences.
Threshold values are for consideration at which point minimum amount of available licences (Threshold Amount) triggers alarm and sends a notification to our selected Contact person to inform that available licences are running out. Threshold interval stands for the time value when Contact person will be alarmed before licences expire. Desired time measurement can be selected from the pulldown menu, i.e. entering 8 and selecting Hour(s) would mean that our Contact receives a notification 8 hours before licences expire.
At this point we are still missing the actual licences, which we are going to put under List within navigation container Licences. Now within content area by clicking new we are entering amount of licences and binding that amount to a Group we just created by selecting "Server XY" from the pulldown menu and giving the Title a name "Server XY Professional". Optionally we can enter one or several licence keys to the Key field as well as Start Date and Expiration Date fields which are defining validity period of our licence contract.
We are almost there, so we still have to bind our licences to a corresponding server objects, otherwise we cannot find out whether one licence is in use or not. First we have to bind a licence with an application, in our case operation system of the server. For that we select from the main navigation point of Software a subcategory Operating System or Application, in our case Operating System will be selected. Now we are either entering a new operating system or selecting existing one from the list and binding our licence to it under the subcategory Licences and picking up from the pulldown menu of Assigned licence our "Server XY Professional".
Last but not least, from the main navigation Infrastructure we will be selecting Server and from the list within content area our desired server object which we are going to bind to corresponding licences. When our server object has been selected we are navigating to the Application/Service and for Application by clicking magnifying glass button to enter in object browser which pops up. From the list we are first clicking "+" left from Software which appends to subnavigation where we are again clicking "+" left from Operating System and now we shall see our operating system of choice and which we select.
If everything worked out as expected, we are suppose to see changes by navigating to main navigation Software, then to Licences, selecting "Server Licences", appending from the navigation Licences container by clicking "+" left to it and selecting subcategory Group. Now within content area of Group we see an overview that one licence from total licences of 10 is in use. If you now click within content area our group "Server XY" more detailed information will be displayed and within section Group Overview our linked infrastructure object can be seen by clicking Show which reveals Assigned Objects overview.
